The Urban Bar Doncaster Senior League Premier Division Cup Final

Dunscroft Utd v Kinsley Boys

The Urban Bar Doncaster Senior League Premier Division Cup Final was a final that will not be easily forgotten. It had everything from comebacks, last minute goals, drama and a penalty shoot out that made it one of the most excited finals the league has witnessed.

This seasons final was contested by 2 teams having contrasting fortunes in the Premier Division. Dunscroft at one point had led the division for a number of weeks but due to circumstances both tragic and injury wise had dropped down to 3rd. Kinsley came into this game having been one of the favourites for the premier division title when it was formed at Christmas after being front runners in the open division had seen their form slump and were only one place off the bottom of the division.

Tonight's match officials were Rudi Bryars in the middle with Richard Job & Trevor Beck on the line and the 4th official was Paul Wood, well done to all on their performances this season that resulted in their appointments for the final.

Before the game kicked off there was a minutes silence in memory of young Ethan Hedley, a player for Dunscroft United who tragically lost his life in a car accident just weeks before the final. Both the teams on the pitch and the good crowd that were in attendance upheld the silence impeccably.

With the formalities over and both teams now ready it was now time for the kick off and nobody had a clue what they had in store for the spectators.

From the kick off Kinsley had most of the ball and a half chance in the first 5 minutes but on 7 minutes a lofted ball into the Kinsley box saw their keeper gift Dunscroft the lead. As he attempted to catch the ball it bounced off his chest and fell to the feet of Daniel Smith who wasn't going to waste his opportunity in putting Dunscroft 1-0 up. The goal seemed to lift Dunscroft and they settled into the game and took control of it.

It was only a matter of time before Dunscroft extended their lead and on the 18th minute they duly did so. Jamie Hindson picked up the ball 25 yards out and decided to let fly, and the ball did fly, swerving and moving in the air over the keepers hand into the roof of the net. A stunning goal that put Dunscroft firmly in the drivers seat.

It was 1 way traffic now but Dunscroft couldn't finish off their chances until 2 minutes before the break when Carl Grant finally put one of their countless chances away and extend their lead to 3-0 which it stayed until the end of the half.

Half Time: Dunscroft Utd 3 Kinsley Boys 0

The second half got under way and it was a continuation of that had happened in the first with Dunscroft creating chances and missing them, it was now up to Kinsley to try and make them pay. As Brian Clough used to say "it only takes a second to score a goal" and with football history full of comebacks from teams when all seemed lost they managed to what most people in the crown would be a consolation goal in the 75th minute from Ben Baines.

The game seemed to be ebbing to a 3-1 win for Dunscroft when in the 79th minute Liam Radford got another for Kinsley pulling ti back to 3-2 and now it was well and truly "Game On"

The next 10 minutes saw Kinsley dominate searching for an equaliser. Dunscroft who had dominated the proceedings for most of the match seemed tired and heavy legged and were just trying to hold on as best they could to their slender lead. In the last minute of the match Kinsley were awarded a free kick 20 yards out to the left hand side of the box, surely their last chance and they made sure they took it. Liam Radford drilled the free kick into the right hand corner and Kinsley had achieved a remarkable come back to level the game up in the dying seconds and taking the game to extra time.

90 Minutes: Dunscroft Utd 3 Kinsley Boys 3

Extra time got underway but both teams seemed drained from their efforts of the first 90 minutes as a few tired challenges went in.

It was Dunscroft that took the game by the scruff of the nack and started to once again create chances and in the last minute of the first period of extra time retook the lead through Carl Grant claiming is 2nd goal of the game.

End of 1st period of extra time: Dunscroft Utd 4 Kinsley Boys 3

The 2nd period of extra time kicked off and the onus was once again on Kinsley to salvage something from the game. Both teams created the odd chance but with with only 5 minutes of the match remaining and with Dunscroft having 1 hand on the Trophy Kinsley did it again and grabbed an equaliser through Ben Baines. In one final twist to the game Dunscroft then went up the pitch and missed an open goal that would have clinched the cup but to no avail and the final whistle blew meaning the final would be decided on penalties.
